COMMUNITY GROUPS

Human Rights Campaign has new name, new leadership

by Jean Tutolo

The Human Rights Campaign, formerly the Human Rights Campaign Fund, mobilizes the political potential of lesbian and gay people in every community in the country, under the guidance of Elizabeth Birch, who assumed leadership of the organization in January 1995.

Birch's selection was the culmination of a six-month extensive national search. Prior to her appointment at HRC, Birch served as director of litigation and human resources counsel for Apple Computer Inc., where she was instrumental in the development of Apple's landmark domestic partnership and non-discrimination policies.

Under Birch's guidance, the Human Rights Campaign unveiled a new political and organizational vision last October: a vision reflective of an organization that is reaching out to more people than ever to build hope and political power for lesbian and gay Americans; job discrimination, AIDS, radical right bigotry and women's health.

Meanwhile, at the local level, Cleveland members of Human Rights Campaign work to organize a fundraising dinner and to educate members of the lesbian and gay community of Greater Cleveland about the importance of HRC. "We are the largest lesbian and gay political force," said Georgiann Pace, co-chair of the HRC dinner committee. "Millions of Americans are coming out and people's attitudes are changing. Now is the time to step up and participate in the process."

Pace, along with co-chair Greg Levine, are facilitating the organization of the annual HRC fundraising dinner which will be held on April 13 at the Marriott Society Center. We will be presenting an award to former Senator Howard Metzenbaum, who will be honored for his efforts to end discrimination against all Americans. Serving as master of ceremonies will be comic Georgia Ragsdale of HBO-Comedy Central's Women Aloud.

Those wishing to attend the HRC dinner, or who would like more information about HRC can call the Human Rights Campaign Hotline at 216-779-6444.
